Langenfeld: City Announces Expansion of the Cycling Network
On 28 June 2026, the city of Langenfeld announced an expansion of the existing cycling network. The goal is to further increase the share of bicycle traffic in the urban area and improve safety for cyclists.
Background and Objectives
In recent years, Langenfeld has already invested in expanding cycling infrastructure. The new measures will particularly strengthen connections between the districts of Reusrath, Richrath and the city centre. The city administration cites the results of a citizen survey from spring 2026 as well as data from the 2025 mobility concept as sources.
The planned measures include:
- New separated bike paths along Düsseldorfer Straße
- Marked protective lanes on Richrather Straße
- Improved intersection designs with priority for cyclists
Schedule and Funding
Construction is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026 and is expected to be completed by spring 2027. Total costs are estimated at around 1.8 million euros, partly covered by funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Public Participation
Citizens have until 15 July 2026 to submit suggestions via the city’s online portal. Further information is available on the City of Langenfeld website at www.langenfeld.de/radverkehr(öffnet in neuem Tab).
The measure aligns with the region’s climate goals and aims to position Langenfeld as a bicycle-friendly municipality.
